FIRST LEAGUE WIN
Warriors Bounce Back, Top Pacific Union
By Brandon Petersen
The Westcliff women's volleyball team shook off a slow start and earned a gritty 3–1 road win over Pacific Union on Thursday night, improving to 1–2 in Cal Pac play.
After dropping the opening set 26–24, the Warriors locked in to take the next three by scores of 25–9, 25–17, and 25–18.
"It was a nice match, a lot of fun," Westcliff head coach Greg Wakeham said. "We were a little rusty out of the gate. Pacific Union has some really good athletes and some good energy, and they were able to take advantage of some of our mistakes to win the first set.
"Then I think the team kind of got serious in the final three games — serving improved, passing improved, and we did really well with that the last three games and Sam got a lot of kills."
Samantha Carelock led the charge with 16 kills on .500 hitting, while Stacy Folas tallied 19 kills and Joliayns Roman added 10.
Setter Amanda Ferreira dished out 38 assists, and libero Daniela Sandoval collected 15 digs.
Wakeham praised his team's adaptability after a lineup change created new opportunities for younger players.
"We had a different lineup because Rena (Comer) didn't come with us," Wakeham said. "So Jolianyns (Roman) was back to middle back and got a lot of points in the back. She hit really well. She got some good kills. It was a fun match and a fun place to be."
Westcliff (6–11, 1–2 Cal Pac) will return to action today for a pair against Simpson and Pacific Union.
