STRAIGHT SETS
Warriors Power Up for League with Win over Eagles
By Brandon Petersen
Westcliff women's volleyball kept their rhythm rolling Friday night at Momentous, sweeping West Coast Baptist in straight sets (25-11, 25-15, 25-9).
The Warriors (4-9) spread the offense around with balance and efficiency.
Samantha Carelock shined as the standout of the match, hammering 10 kills on a .529 hitting percentage while also adding three aces and a solo block for 14 points. Carelock now sits just one finish away from Westcliff's all-time kills record.
"Today was about really getting focused for next week and taking advantage of the opportunities West Coast Baptist gave us to improve on the skills we need to compete with Cal Lutheran and Simpson," said Westcliff head coach Greg Wakeham. "It's nice that they came. I love playing West Coast Baptist because they play hard the whole time. Their skill level can come and go, but they're a nice example of sportsmanship. Their coach is really nice."
Serena Comer added nine kills and 10 digs while hitting .467, while Joliayns Roman contributed nine kills, 10 assists and three aces in a do-it-all effort.
Setter Lauren Phinnessee handed out 26 assists and chipped in two aces of her own.
Wakeham praised the way his team used the match to fine-tune before tougher tests ahead.
"We'll be up there in October again to play them at their place. I think it's their senior night, so that'll be fun," Wakeham said. "I think they have the most fans of all the teams we play, so that'll be great. But yeah, today was really trying to get primed for what we're going to see next week and take advantage of the chance to be in the gym and have a game like that."
Westcliff returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 23, against Cal Lutheran at Golden West College.
First serve is set for 6 p.m.
