Calderon qualifies for Nationals at CCC tournament
By Brandon Petersen
History was made for Westcliff men's wrestling this weekend as Christopher Calderon became the first men's wrestler in program history to qualify for the NAIA National Championships, highlighting a resilient showing for the Warriors at the conference tournament.
Despite several tightly contested matches across the lineup, head coach D'Rell Gist praised the team's effort and competitive spirit throughout the event.
"Overall, we lost some very close matches that could have gone either way, but I'm proud of the boys' effort and heart," Gist said.
Calderon led the way, placing sixth in his weight class to secure one of six national qualifying spots and officially punch his ticket to nationals.
His path to qualification featured an impressive opening day that saw him advance to the semifinals, including a standout technical fall victory over the No. 17-ranked wrestler in the country.
Gist called Calderon's performance the highlight of the tournament.
"The standout of the tournament was Christopher Calderon for winning by tech fall over the No. 17 ranked wrestler in the country and becoming the first men's NAIA national qualifier in program history," Gist said.
After falling in a tightly contested semifinal match decided by a single takedown, Calderon faced additional adversity on the backside of the bracket but responded with resilience, closing his tournament with a victory to secure his historic qualification.
"Chris had an amazing day one and advanced to the semifinals," Gist said. "Unfortunately, he lost a super close match by one takedown, then dropped another close match on the backside, but he showed heart, battled through adversity and finished with a win in his final match to punch his ticket to nationals."
Gavin Mitchell and Caiman Garcia also delivered strong performances for the Warriors, with both wrestlers earning sixth-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
While the overall team results fell short of highest expectations, Gist emphasized the continued growth of a developing roster and the significance of the program's breakthrough milestone.
"We are still a young team and have a lot to improve on, but we are definitely headed in the right direction," Gist said.
With Calderon's qualification marking a new chapter for Westcliff men's wrestling, the Warriors now turn their focus toward preparing Calderon for the NAIA National Championships as the program continues to build momentum on the national stage.
The Warrior women are headed to their own CCC tournament next week.
