Men’s Volleyball Prepares to Go on the Road

Irvine, Calif. – After a tough battle with Ottawa (AZ) last Friday, the warrior volleyball team prepares to go on the road to face Arizona Christian University, Benedictine-Mesa and Ottawa again in Arizona. The warriors showed a lot of heart in set two against the spirit, going into overtime and dropping the set 31-33. Junior captain, Marques Buggs led all players with 15 kills, 7 digs and 5 blocks while freshman setter, Spencer Hirai, paced the offense dishing out 21 assists. Junior outside hitter, Rene Maza chipped in 9 kills and libero, TJ Meyer, paced the defense notching 10 digs on the night. Men’s volleyball will face Ottawa again in Arizona on Friday (3/15/19) at 7 pm. They will face Arizona Christian University on Saturday at 2 pm and finish out the weekend at #4 Benedictine-Mesa at 1 pm on Sunday.

Warriors Battle but can’t Overcome Redhawks

Garden Grove, Calif. – The warriors battled with the Benedictine University Redhawks but couldn’t take a set off the #4 ranked team in the nation, dropping three straight sets (13-25, 22-25, 19-25). Benedictine was led by outside hitter, Greg Michael, while Westcliff was led by junior outside hitter, Marques Buggs, who both led their teams with 8 kills in the standoff. Freshman middle blocker, Barry Greenough, led all players with 4 blocks in the three set effort. The warriors battled back after dropping the first set 13-25 but could not find their passing rhythm in the subsequent sets. The warriors look to bounce back with a matches on the road at #8 Hope International University on 2/27 at 7 pm and then against the UC Merced Bobcats on “Blue Out” night at home on Friday, 3/1 at 7 pm.

Men’s Volleyball Victorious Against Arizona Christian in Home Opener

Garden Grove, Calif. – The Westcliff University Warriors cinched their first home win in their home opener against the Arizona Christian University Firestorm in four sets (25-22, 25-17, 20-25, 25-21). The warriors took the first two sets, with the firestorm battling back to take the third set. The warriors then regrouped and closed out the match, taking the fourth set. Freshman setter, Spencer Hirai, dished out 19 assists with junior opposite hitter, Marques Buggs, leading all players with 10 kills. Freshman middle blocker, Barry Greenough, and freshman outside hitter, James Santos, both chipped in 7 & 6 kills each. The warriors return to their home court next week on Friday 2/22 as they take on the #4 ranked Benedictine University Redhawks. Game time is 6:30 pm.

Warriors Drop Match with Menlo, Sweep Irvine Valley College

Irvine, Calif. – The Warriors battled but could not withstand the storm, dropping a four set match to the Menlo College Oaks. Junior outside hitter, Marques Buggs, led the warrior with 19 kills (hitting 0.412), 2 aces and 5 blocks. Freshman outside hitter, James Santos, chipped in 9 kills and 1 ace, while freshman setter, Sean Collins notched 23 assists. Junior middle blocker, Alan Zelaya, had a team high 7 blocks. The warriors then turned around and regrouped, sweeping the Irvine Valley College Lasers on their home court (25-23, 25-21, 25-23). Buggs hit a blistering 0.529 with 12 kills and 2 aces, while middle blocker, Barry Greenough, also had a hot hand, hitting 0.653 and notching 9 kills. Freshman setters, Sean Collins and Spencer Hirai, split the setting duties and collected 14 & 15 assists each. Up next for the warriors is a home standoff against the Arizona Christian University...

Warriors Battle on the Road

Merced, Calif – The Westcliff University Warriors battled hard with Menlo College and UC Merced on a three day road trip up north over the weekend. In the first match against Menlo on Friday evening, freshman middle blocker, Barry Greenough, hit a blistering 0.625 and also notched 2 blocks. In the second match against Menlo on Saturday, outside hitter, James Santos was hot hitting 0.400 and garnering 5 aces. The Warriors then traveled across the 99 freeway to UC Merced where they pushed the bobcats to four sets in front of a feisty home crowd. Junior captain, Marques Buggs, led all players with 22 kills and 12 digs. Freshman setter, Sean Collins, totaled 37 assists in the outing.   The warriors return to Irvine to face Menlo and Irvine Valley College again in two weeks at IVC.  Matches are at 11 am and 1 pm.

Buggs’ hitting streak not enough to handle CUI

1/17/19 – Junior, Marques Buggs, hit a hot 0.450 and accounted for more than half of the team kills with 13 kills as the warriors were swept by NCAA DII opponent, Concordia University – Irvine. Freshman setters, Sean Collins and Spencer Hirai, both chipped in 12 and 7 assists respectively, while Barry Greenough and Cameron Fry both garnered 2 blocks. Sophomore libero, TJ Meyer, led all players with 9 digs on the night. The warriors will hit the road and head to Northern California to play Menlo College and then complete the roadtrip with a match at UC Merced next week.

History Made! Men’s Volleyball wins first match in program history

1/10/19 – Thousand Oaks, Calif. – The warrior men’s volleyball team brought home its first win in program history downing Arcadia University (PA) in 5 sets at Cal Lutheran University. The warriors battled back after dropping the first set 22-25 to win set two 25-23. After losing set three 19-25, the warriors went on a hot streak winning sets four and five 25-23 and 15-6. Junior, Marques Buggs, led all players with 19 kills while middles, Barry Greenough and Alan Zelaya, both chipped in 10 and 9 kills. Freshman outside hitter, James Santos, had 8 kills, 3 aces and 9 digs. The warriors hit 0.327 as a team for the match off the setting of Sean Collins who had 45 assists in the outing.

Westcliff University Adds Men’s Volleyball and Introduces Head Coach Danko Iordanov

Irvine, CA. April 15, 2018 – Westcliff University Athletic Director Paul Cook has announced the addition of Men’s Volleyball as a varsity sport for WU Athletics. The men’s team will start its inaugural season in the spring of 2019. Men’s volleyball has been gaining momentum nationally and recently reached the milestone and becoming the newest championship sport in the NAIA! Westcliff University has a strong academic tradition and is now establishing a strong athletic presence with the goal of becoming competitive regionally and nationally. The university has hired Danko Iordanov to be the head coach. Coach Iordanov brings a wealth of experience as a player and as a coach. He spent his 4-year collegiate playing career at (then) NCAA DI Rutgers University as an Opposite and Outside hitter, where in 2003 he was named Rutgers’s Male Athlete of the year.
