Irvine, CA. April 15, 2018 – Westcliff University Athletic Director Paul Cook has announced the addition of Men’s Volleyball as a varsity sport for WU Athletics. The men’s team will start its inaugural season in the spring of 2019. Men’s volleyball has been gaining momentum nationally and recently reached the milestone and becoming the newest championship sport in the NAIA!
Westcliff University has a strong academic tradition and is now establishing a strong athletic presence with the goal of becoming competitive regionally and nationally. The university has hired Danko Iordanov to be the head coach. Coach Iordanov brings a wealth of experience as a player and as a coach. He spent his 4-year collegiate playing career at (then) NCAA DI Rutgers University as an Opposite and Outside hitter, where in 2003 he was named Rutgers’s Male Athlete of the year. He also spent time playing professionally in Europe and has been competing on the beach in the US and internationally in the past 12 years. As a player and a coach Danko has had the unique opportunity to train and work with Olympians and world class experts in the volleyball field.
Coach Iordanov commented, “I am extremely honored to have been selected to establish and lead the inaugural Men’s Volleyball Warrior team! University president, Dr. Anthony Lee and the Athletic Director Paul Cook have a great vision for our athletics program and the level of support has been amazing. A testament to their commitment to athletics in the building of a brand new gym, which will be our home starting this fall and this is very exciting. Men’s volleyball is especially popular here in Southern California. The men will now have another place to continue their volleyball journey at the next level while pursuing a college degree in the heart of Southern California, which is a great location. We are building something special here.
