Patty Medina has been named Westcliff University head women’s basketball coach for the program’s inaugural season. Prior to Westcliff, Medina was the head coach at Bethesda University for two seasons where she garnered NCCAA West Region Coach of the Year honors back to back. Medina enters Westcliff with hopes of building a program from the ground up that will be a contender in the NAIA for years to come.

A San Diego Native, she is no stranger to the Southern California community or the competition that comes with collegiate level basketball.  She has been coaching for fourteen years, including six seasons as an assistant coach for many Southern California junior colleges. Preceding Bethesda, Medina coached at Saddleback College, in Mission Viejo, where she was mentored by Coach Fentriss Winn who shared his basketball knowledge and expertise, preparing Medina for future coaching opportunities.

Before coaching in Orange County, Medina was in Chula Vista for the 2014-2015 basketball season where she was an assistant coach for Southwestern College, a school she returned to after having helped the program earn its first Pacific Coast Athletic Conference title in 2010-2011.  In 2011-2012, Medina also helped make history at San Diego Mesa College. Under Medina’s guidance, Mesa went undefeated in conference play (12-0) and earned its first conference title in more than a decade. She was also the assistant coach at Grossmont College from 2012-2014.

Before entering into the community college ranks, Medina spent six years as assistant varsity coach at Sweetwater High School in National City, California. During Medina’s tenure at Sweetwater under the guidance of her former coach, Heather Huckaby, the girls’ team hosted its first home C.I.F. playoff game in the school’s 35-year history and won its first League Championship in 15 years

Medina’s diverse experiences have helped her accumulate a wealth of knowledge which she looks forward to incorporating as she establishes the women’s program at Westcliff University. Coach Medina brings a wealth of experience and record of success from the High School, College and National Levels as a teacher, coach and administrator. Coach Medina has excelled and takes great pride in embracing the challenge of start-up programs and leading them to successful results.

Medina earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from San Diego State University, has a double Master’s Degree in Education and in Organizational Leadership from National University; as well as, an Athletic Coach Certificate from Fullerton College.

Assistant Coach

Michelle Flynn

Michelle Flynn enters her first coaching season at Westcliff University as the volunteer Assistant Coach for the Warriors’ inaugural 2018-19 season.

Flynn brings a wealth of basketball experience and familiarity to Westcliff, as she was a point guard at fellow opponent La Sierra University from 2016-2018. She has previously played under Coach Patty Medina at Southwestern College in Chula Vista and has been under her mentorship since 2015. At Southwestern, she was a team captain, averaging 10 points per-game and was the Academic Athlete of the Year. She is also a basketball official for the San Diego County Officials High School Association.

“Michelle is a great addition to my staff,” said head coach Patty Medina. “She brings tremendous experience to us having played and worked her way through the college playing ranks.  Because of her time at La Sierra University she understands our level and how competitive it is. We are lucky to have her join the Warrior family.”

A native from Oxnard, she currently resides in San Diego and volunteers her time to help Coach Patty Medina and the Westcliff Warriors. Michele is currently attending Concordia University in Irvine seeking to attain her Masters in Coaching and Athletic Administration. She received her bachelors in Psychology from La Sierra University and an Associates Degree in Psychology from Southwestern College.
