Westcliff University Introduces Athletics

Westcliff University in Irvine, CA is pleased to announce the launch of a new intercollegiate athletic program. Under the direction of the president, Dr. Anthony Lee, the university has undertaken this adventure to bring student athletes into the university to further our mission to educate, inspire, and empower students through education and athletics. This program was officially launched on July 3, 2017 with the addition of two sports that include men’s basketball coached by John Janssen and men and women’s track and field coached by Paul Cook, who will also serve as our athletic director.

Men's Basketball

John Janssen M.A.Ed. Head Coach of Men’s Basketball. John Janssen brings a wealth of experience to Westcliff University bench after he concluded his 7th season as a college coach before being hired to start the program at Westcliff. Last year, John was the head coach for Bristol University in Anaheim, California, and during the 2015/16 season, Janssen worked as the head assistant coach at Bethesda University. Prior to that, John was an assistant coach at Chapman University where in 2014/15 he helped lead the Panthers to their first ever SCIAC Championship. Previous to that John coached at Cal Baptist University in Riverside and Concordia University in Ann Arbor. In 2010, Janssen coached at the University of Redlands where he also earned a Master of Arts in Higher Education. While at Redlands, Janssen helped the Bulldogs capture the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and a birth in the 2011 NCAA Division III National Tournament, which was the school’s first appearance in 26 years.

Track and Field

Paul Cook, M.Ed. Athletic Director and Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach. For three years he served as Executive Director of Southern California USA Track and Field, and he has taught and coached at California State University Long Beach, Hope International University, The Master’s University, Bristol University, and he advises elite coaches and athletes in the USA and around the world. Coach Cook has also coached athletes that were all-conference, all-American, and Olympic level. He is in high demand in the USA and around the world as a consultant and expert in coaching techniques, coaching education, sports science, sports medicine, and sports psychology. Athletically he has been an elite professional distance runner, and he has been a podium finisher at major races and national and international championships. He has been a team member on many national championships teams. Coach Cook has the 20-kilometer world and American record for master’s runners, and he has earned numerous other awards throughout his career.
